STOPPING WORK

ON RAILWAY DEVIATION

PALMERSTON N., April 19

Work commenced at the railway deviation to-day of tearing up the eight miles of track laid, and the collection of materials for storage. Several officers have received notice of transfer to Gisborne and Nelson districts. Following inquiries instituted, about 90 per cent, of the men signified their willingness to transfer to other undertakings. Ten men are proceeding to Gisborne on Monday and forty by the end of next week. There are 150 general labourers employed on the deviation.
