The transfer of certain of New Zealand’s .principal song birds, where they are plentiful, to some of the large forest areas in the north is being attempted, the object being to see whether the birds will thrive in new surroundings. Recently the Minister lor Internal Affairs (Hon Mr de la. Perelle) arranged with the director of the Dominion Muesoum (Mr W. B. Oliver) to take one or two of that notable native songster, the liellbird, from the sanctuary at Little Barrier Island and liberate them in the Waipoua Forest, a great area of bush land—in which there are very many fine specimens of the giant kauri—some twenty miles from Dargaville.

The death took place yesterday at his residence, Hall Street, of Mr John Andrews, a well known resident of the town for years, and formerly ot Kmnara. Deceased, who was 85 years of age, came to New Zealand 53 years ago. He first worked as storeman for the late Hon. R. J. Seddon, at Goldsborough, and then took up mining, working there and at Kumara until ho retired some years ago. Deceased leaves a widow and family of three daughters (Mrs Stephens, of (Masterton, ami Misses Florence and Alice Andrews, of Hokitika), and four sons < Alfred, of Napier, Frederick, Herbert, and George, of Hokitika) to whom will be extended the sympathy of a wide circle of friends.
