SIR W. NOSWORTHY
ASHBURTON BANQUET

ASHBURTON, April 16
His services to the people of Ashburton County over a period of twenty years as member for the district and as a Minister of the Crown, were recognised to-night when Sir William Nosworthv was entertained at a banquet given by the citizens of the town and country. There was an attendance of about 300. representing local bodies and the public. The gqests were: Sir Heaton Rhodes, Mr T. D. Burnett, Mr D. .Jones, Mr F. J. Rolleston. Mr F. G. Evans (Provincial President of the Farmers’ Union) who presided, had with him the Mayor (Mr, R. Galbraith).
Apologies for absence were received from Mr Coates and the Prime Minister, Sir Joseph Ward. The forme)’ eulogised the work of Sir W. Nosworthy as a Minister of the Crown, saying that he never had looked for a gap in the fence.
Mr J. Carr (County Chairman) in proposing the toast of the guest, spoke in glowing terms of Sir W. Nosworthv’s work for Ashburton since he was elected in 1908.
Sir William Nosworthy said that he had no thought in the matter at present, but if. an occasion ever arose lie would unsheath his sword and would again enter the fight.
A grandfather clock was presented to Sir W. Noswortliy, arid a gift for Liuly Nosworthy.
Mr D. Jones, in his speech, argued +he claims of co-operation, saying that too much time was. spent in findin" ways of stopping men from working, ff Parliament tackled the problem of the unemployed as they knew it should be tackled, if would be solved. He said that the guaranteed rate of 14" per day was the worst blow ever struck nt New Zealand workers. Tlie coming Parliament would be a most important one. and the members would have to bond to meet the blast.
