BETTER COAL FORTHCOMING

"WESTPORT, April 15
News was received to-night that the difference existing at Penniston ns to the quality of the coal supplied to the workers has been satisfactorily settled and the management ot the Westport Coal Coy. this evening intimated to the Miners’ Union that an improved quality of fuel would now he supplied to the miners. The Deiinistoiii mine will therefore resume operations in the morning.

AUCKLAND, April 15
Colonel S. 'S. Allen, Administrator of Samoa, arrived by the Tofua this afternoon, and left for Wellington tonight hv train to consult with the Prime Minister on Samoan affairs. Colonel Allen was met by Lord Waleran on behalf of tiie Governor-Gen-eral and Mr C. A. Bercndsen, Secretary of tho External Affairs Department, on behalf of the Government.
PRISON ESCAPEE SURRENDERS
"WANGANUI, April 15
Hungry and with a keen realisation that the police were hot on his trail. Walter Patrick Murphy, a- prisoner, who escaped from Waikuno Prison Camp on Tuesday last, walked into the Police Station at Wanganui yesterday afternoon, and gave himself up. ITe will he charged at the Magistrate’s Court with breaking and entering the premises of S. J. Harris, boot importer, at Aramoho. Further charges regarding other recent- burglaries are pending.
FINE FOR BOOKMAKERS
DANNEVIRKE, April 15
Pleading guilty to a charge of loitering in High S r treet, Daiinevrke, for the purposes of betting, William Joseph'Donovan, who keeps a tobacconist business, was fined £35 to-day by ‘Mr J. Miller. S.M. ' The police stated 1 Fiat Donovan’s chief business was betting, and said 'they believed he was the agent for a big bookmaker. The Magistrate declined to accept a plea from counsel for the defendant. that Donovan was only a silver bettor in view of . the fact that over £SO was found on him after bis arrest;' which was the sequel to a cycle ride by Sergeant Martin on March 1 30t:h last.
POLICE OFFICERS DETAINED AUCKLAND. April 16
Owing to temperatures being slightly above normal seven of the eighteen police, detailed for Saiftoa, were detained by the Health .Department wheir the others left by the Maui Tonrare''last night. They'"will probably follow bv a later boat'.
