ROADS AND ROADWAY

IN SOUTH WESTLAND

The visit of the No. 12 District Highways Council to South Westland on Wednesday and Thursday, afforded the constituent members an opportunity of inspecting the roads and reading of the district. Mr T. A. Johnston, District Engineer, was in charge of tho party, and had with him the DistrictOverseer, Mr P. Fitzgerald. Considerable work is going ahead on the southern roads, and great improvements are being made. A considerable amount of widening lias been done all along the route. 1 lie corners of the hills in particular have had special attention. Noticeable improvements have been made in lantlie Hill and Mt. Hercules, as well as. round Lake lantlie. In fact, all the way to Waiho a very large amount of useful work has been done in widening necessary places. .Beyond Waiho, towards Welieka, also, on the Government road, gangs are engaged widening and providing a much improved roadway. The bridges are being pushed on. A fine bridge has been placed across Slaty Creek which was a very rough crossing for vehicles. r l here is a splendid bridge now across Wailaikupa rivei , finished six weeks ago. It is a credit to all concerned, and the Department’s staff is to he congratulated on the celerity with which it was erected once the material was on the ground. A small replacement- bridge at La I*ontaine on tlie main highway was completed yesterday. The deviation and new bridge at Red Jacks creek is well advanced, and the southern, approach for MacDonald’s Creek bridge is being put in. McCullough Creek bridge will be put in hand very soon. The material is now arriving and to expedite the work, tlie County authorities are loaning hardwood piles. Some additional open crossings are being superseded by covered culverts, and altogether the works in hand indicate that the Public Works Department are carrying out a considerable scheme of works for the benefit of the district.
