Returning hom e yesterday evening the mother and step-father of Clifford Inm Erickson, aged 15, found the lad lying dead in a passage with a rope alongside the body, indicating death by hanging. A playmate of five years inul found Erickson hanging and contrived to get tlu> body down and remove the rope which had hung over the top of a door.

Tn a letter to the Hon H. Atmore, Minister of Education, covering a resolution passed by the executive commiteo of the Nelson branch of the Farmers’ Union, favouring a revision of the present educational system in New Zealand, the secretary added: “I might mention that the members of the committee expressed absolute confidence in you and were of opinion that the proposed system, so lucidly outlined hv you, under your able jurisdiction would be for the great benefit of the community at large and the fanning community in particular, and that the present system would in no way he reduced in efficiency.”

Sterling) is the revision and re-arrangement of all rule hooks, instructions, code hooks and supplementary advices to the staff. This work is expected to occupy Mr G. T. The case against Udv was continued to-dav. Accused said lie had just finished killing sheep and brought tlie fat to the safe when lie had ail argument with his mother over old fat left In the safe. “The old man came out of the house and gave me a smack on the jaw. 1 just stepped hack.” His Father made another smack at him and lie put up his left hand to ward off his father, who fell. His father tried to get up hut he pushed him down again. Accused stated lie told Detective Jarrolcl two or three times that it was an accident, but the detective would not take this part of the statement and said it was not an accident, that lie was scared of the old mail and let him have it.

MASTER TON, April 10

In the Udy case, accused described as untrue that he stabbed his father, as made in accused’s statement to the detective which he only looked through as he was nearly asleep at the time. This completed the evidence for the defence.

The jury retired at 12.30 to consider their verdict, and returned at one p.m. with a verdict of not guilty.

GIRLS’ PREDICAMENT. CHRISTCHURCH, April 10

A young woman, aged eighteen years of age, was found lying at the corner of Barbadoes Street and Brougham Street, Sydenham, at 7 o’clock last evening. She was riding a bicycle when she was suddenly heard to scream and then fall to the road. She was hospitalled in a condition not serious and subsequently another girl reported she been attacked in Brougham Street, while riding a bicycle by a man who made off when she screamed.

The police are inquiring into both cases.

HOMESTEAD BURNT. GISBORNE, April 10

A well-known homestead in Motu district was destroyed by fire as the result (>if a flare up of a patent stove which had been left for a minute, (lames catching the table cloth and quickly spreading through the house. The property was owned by E. Richardson who, with insurance of only CSOO is a heavy loser.

RAILWAY DEVIATION

PALMERSTON N„ April 10,

The Prime Minister and lions. •Forbes, Wilford, At more, Yeitcli, Taverner. Donald, de la Perello, Cobbo, Stallworthy, arrived at Palmerston North at midday for th 0 purpose of inspecting the deviation railway works that have been in progress for some time past. It has been rumoured that it is the intention ol the Government to close operations here, hut Sir Joseph Ward declined to make a statement, saving that after an inspection the Cabinet would consider the matter and make a decision. Sir Joseph Ward declined to receive deputations in the question of the deviation.
