Sum k special articles have boon appearing in tin* metropolitan paper--extolling tli<> beauties of (lie Franz Josef ami Fox Hlaciors in South WestImml. The articles are copyright-oil. but their wide vogue will afford special publicity to the scenic gems referred to. The beauLy of tin* twin rivals is extolled to the highest degree. and with tlio permission of tin* writer .might well bo used for, publicity purposes over a wider area than they have enjoyed already. The writer, however, referred to the fact that for so many decades the loculi tie have remained unhonoured and on sung, and blame must be accepted on all sides for tlio reniissnoss. ft is >■ fact, of course, that of late yearmuch has been done hv way of amend to piiblish abroad the heaetiis am’ attractions of the two localities which are at last coming into their own. I 1 is worthy of remark .also, that piiiale enterprise has played no mean pa'-t in this publicity, while the same spirit of enterprise has been responsible for providing essential accommodation in
and about the localities for the. convenience of visitors. Were if not h r that enterprise the two local ions would he more backward still in public estimation. Other localities more fortunately central have had the benefit of the Government patronage and very liberal expend if lire. In both Islands the Government has its special resorts provided and maintained out of the public exchequer, but West Coast resorts have not been so favoured. Any special expenditure here lias been doled out by the tourist authorities in very niggardly iasliion. and only after frequent requests. Elsewhere. in the fortunate centres, thousands of pounds are handled out readily, while the degree of publicity for sueli places is also unstinted. The Coast is far too backward in those matters. Perhaps it is because it is nobody’s special business the needs of the dislrict in such publicity work is largely overlooked. let ■it!: such i!iii<|**e attractions in South West la ml as the newspaper writer depicts iit such splendid word colouring, surely there is reason enough for a very generous helping from the public funds to assist in making more widely known the special and peculiar alt rat lions of South Westland which stand unrivalled in the whole Dominion. if not tin- Southern Hemisphere.
