BYRD POLAR ENVELOPE

BRINGS £ls AT SALE

A stamped envelope carried by Commander R. E. Byrd over the North Pole during his successful airplane flight on A lay 9, 192(5, was sold at auction recently at the Collectors’ Club, New York, for £ls. The envelope ifornied a portion of many air mail “ covers,” as they are called, and a general postage stamp collection sold by M. Herbert and Co., Walter S. Scott being the auctioneer. The Byrd air-mail envelope bore a current United States two-cent stamp and two of the Norway polar stamps, and was postmarked from Kings Ray. Its value from a collective standpoint was enhanced by the autograph ol Commander Byrd. The auctioneer stated that it was purchased for a New York collector. It was the first Byrd North Polo flight envelope sold at auction in some time.

Another air mail cover sold was one carried by Commander di Pinedo on his flight from Tropassv, Newfoundland, to Rome on Alay 21. 1927. It was stamped with a copy of the (>i;cent Newfoundland stamp of the 1897 issue, without the customary surcharge. This brought £ls. Only about 40 of these envelopes, with the unsurcharged stamp, were carried on the flight.
