SURVEYOR-GENERAL
AIR H. E. AVALSHIC APPOINTED. WELLINGTON, April 4. The appointment was announced to day of Air Harry E. Walshe (elm ! draughtsman of the Department of Lands and Survey) to the position or' Surveyor-General. Since the retirement of AH W. T. Neill from the position of Surveyor-General at December 31st last the office has been temporarily filled by Air J. B. Thompson. Under-Secretarv for Lands, pending the permanent appointment. Art- AValshe has been for many yea is in dose touch with the scientific and technical activities of the Department. ITe joined the service in 1960, became a field cadet in 1903, and in 1907 passed his surveyor’s examination with much credit. Mr AValshe was then appointed staff surveyor, serving in the districts of Otago and Hawke's Bay. In 1919 he was appointed senior draughtsman in tin* head office, and in 1924 -he became chief draughtsman, also acting as Deputy SurveyorGeneral. In 1903-1 Mr A\ alslio assisted with the field magnetic surveys of the Dominion. He also accompanied tho Canterbury Philosophical Society's exiHxlition •to the Chatham Islands and fixed the latitude and longitude of the wireless station here.
