WESTLAND PRESBYTERY

The half-yearly meeting of the Westland Presbytery took place at Most port on Wednesday, April 3rd, in St. Andrew’s church. Present:. Rev. .1. W. Hayward (moci orator'). Rev. A. Miller and Rev. T. N. Cuttle (ministers) and Messrs AAebb. Vickers. Humble and Fotlieringlmm (home missionaries). V A most successful series off meetings was held, not only in connection with the routine business of the presbytery, hut also in the summer school tor home missionaries, the public meetings and tbo social functions. Glorious weather prevailed, whic-li added greatly to the enjoyment of the- visitors who had come from ifar and near. The Rev. J. W. Hayward was re-electt’d moderator for tin* ensuing year. A vote of condolence was passed with Mr and Airs W. T. -Morpeth and Miami Mis James Park, of Hokitika, in connection with the bereavement the\ had suffered early in the year. The reports of the home missionaries greatly impressed the Presbytery showing tlie difficulties to be met in regard to tlie number of places to lie supplied, the widely scattered natuie off their districts and the indifference off many people. Aot good and devoted work was being done and they wcie receiving much earnest and loyal support. Mr Dibbs had resigned from Tot--a Flat and Mr Heyward from Russ, and ii successor was yet appointed to those places. Rev. T. N. The report of the Sunday School examinations showed that Betty Cuttle, of Greymouth. had won the medal in her section lor New Zealand. Reports on Preshyteria! visitation were given by Mr t utLle on tlie Hokitika charge and by Mr Hayward on tlie Westport congregation. Suitable findings were drawn up and directed to be sent to the congregations concerned. In view ol the jubilee o the Westport charge in November, 192!), tlie Presbytery agreed to invite Prolessor Hewiken, moderator ot the General Assembly to visit tlie West Coas in connection therewith. Social functions in connection with the Presbytery were a tea in St. Andrew’s Hall on Wednesday and an excursion on Thursday afternoon to the lotara river. These were much enjoyed and a special vote off thanks was passed to the ladies for their hospitality -and to Newman Pros, for their kindness in placing a lino car at the disposal of the visitor for the outing. At the summer school papers and addresses were given by the ministers oil such subjects as Ibe Conduct of Public Worship,” the “Sermon.” and •“ Pastoral Visitation,” and interesting discussions took place upon all these. A Home Mission demonstration was held in St. Andrew’s Church on Thursday cveiling, interesting addresses being given by Mr Vickers (ICumara), Mr Webb (Beefton), Mr Humble (Graiijtv) and Mr Fothcringhain (Denniston) iinu the whole proceedings were marked by earnestness and enthusiasm. • The Moderator expressed thanks on helm Iff of the visitors for tlie excellent arrangements made and for the liospi-

A Alillor and Airs Aliller and their helpers and congratulated the minister on having such a line body of office hearers as had been revealed by the visitation he had carried out during the week. It was decided to hold the next meeting of Presbytery at Greymouth, rtn Tuesday, 10th September.
