Tlie Daily Mail expresses the opinion that the British General Election will cost at least two and a-hnlf millions sterling. It will he the most expensive ele ti.». owing to the increased electorate since the passing of the Corrupt Practices Act in 1883, previous to which there was hut little check on the candidates’ expenditure, which in 1180 amounted to £1,735,000, or a sum equivalent to 20s for each voter. The-recent Act, states the paper, limits the candidates’ expenditure to sixpence per head of the electorate in the country divisions, and livepence per head in boroughs, besides the salaries ol tile e,action agents and the candidates’ personal expenses. The latter are limited to £ICO.

The Daily Mail adds: It is e.vpe ted that the Conservatives and the Liberals assisted by their large party funds, will spend the maximum in every constituency, reaching in some cases to £1975. The La on rites, owing to enforced economy are budget-ting lor ail average of £450 for each contest.

LORD BALFOUR,’S EXIT

LONDON, April 3

Lord Balfour has decided to sell No. 4 Carlton Gardens, where he lias lived for 48 years. Lord Palmerston lived in this house from 1846 to 1854.

Lord Balfour is not expected to continue to act as Lord President of the Council after the General Election. He probably will retire to liis Scottish residence at Wliittinghame.

ATTACK ON LLOYD GEORGE

LONDON. April 4

The Hon. J. H. Thomas, the Labour M.P., speaking at Plymouth, attacked Mr Lloyd George’s unemployment proposals. He declared: “The politician who talks about an immediate cure is lying, and the man who says that a cure can be effected without cost is n f ol or a knave.”
