SPEED REGATTA
MONDAY’S REGATTA
.Much public interest was taken in the final regatta of the season of the Lake Kanieri Boat Club on Monday last at Lake Kanieri, and a large crowd assembled to witness the tests. The day was opened at 1.30 p.m., the first event being the All Gomel’s Rcae, tliis being followed by the Lake Kanieri Champiolnship, Westland Handicap, and Open Handicap races in succession.
All Comers Race.—The following boats entered for this event and started in the order given: Miss Kanieri (E. Park), Pioneer, (Andrews jnr.), Dorothy (.1. Cantrick), Buzz-Off (C. Hart), Checkmate (A. Chapman;, Playmate (F. Andrews), (Dr Buchanan), XQQAIE (\Y. 6’Brien), Pit-a-Pat (J. N. Robinson). A course of three miles was selected lor this race and Checkmate (A.' Chapman) proved pip easy winner followed by the Buzz Off which was disqualified for making an early start,' second place being secured by the Playmate (F. Andrews). Throughout , tli is race the Checkmate showed a surprising .• : • ", ■ .i turn ol speed. Lake Kanieri Championship, l'oi L.Y.A. Cup, distance two miles.—The following boats entered; Pit-a-pat (J. N. Robinson). Miss Evinrude (L. Gooch), Buzz Off (C. Hart). The Buzz Off again crossed the line ahead of time and was disqualified, the other two boats making perfect starts. A very keen contest followed between the remaining two boats; which are fitted with identical Evinrude engines, although . shortly after the eomencenient the (‘Pit-a-Pat established a lead which " she maintained' throughout the race. During the last lap the Miss Kvinrude' appeared to'lose ground th<> Pit-aPat'finishing first in the record time of 4min 1 4-ssecs.'

Chapman), Buzz Off (J. 11. W. McGeorgo). Playmate (F. Andrews). Miss Evinrudo (L. Gooch). Pit-a-pat (J. X. Robinson). With the exception of the Miss Evinrudo the boats made good starts. Pit-a-pat coming in first (G min 311 secs) followed bv Miss Evinrude and Buzz Offi for second and third place. Second heat.—The boats started in the same order the handicaps being re-ad in-tod.' the Buzz Off being put b... .. ; els and the Pit-a-J’al n*• 1 1 Miss F rn.vde 20 secoiuls. Third boat:—The above . boats together with the Cheerio (Dr Buchanan) entered for this heat. Playmate (F. Andrews) made a late start, blit showed a great burst of speed thoughout this heat. The boats to gain places were:—lst. Pit-a-Pat (6 min. 24 see.) 2nd. Miss Evinrude. 3rd. Buzz Off. Fourth heat:—All boats made good starts except the Buzz Off which start, od late hut overtook the Checkmate before the latter rounded the western buoy. A keen contest then followed between the Buzz OIT and the Cheerio, the latter securing first place for the heat, followed by the Pit-a-Pat and Miss Evinrude. The final results of the Westland Handicap are as follows: Points. Pit-a-Pat (J. X. Robinson) \-"Of Miss Evinrude (L. Gooch) 1016 Buzz Off (J. 11. W. M’George) 1298 Checkmate (A. Chapman) 613 Playmate (F. Andrews) bio Cheerio (Or Buchanan) F 0 Open Handicap for Burns’ C’up. 2 miles. The following entered: Cheekmate. Buzz OIF. Cheerio. Playmate. Miss Evinrude, Pit-a-Pat. This proved to Ik? the most interesting race of the day. Cheerio, on Us handicap, easily outdistancing the other boats and gaining first place, several other boats finishing within a narrow margin, l’lay. mate again developed engine trouble and abandoned the contest. A keen contest took place between the Pit-a Pat and Miss Kvinrnde, both boats rounding the final buoy together. Medal for fastest time round course: This.medal previously held by L. Gooch
now goes to J. N. Robinson who succeeded in establishing record time during the first lap of the second heat of the Westland Handicap contest. The times were: L>. Gooch (Miss Evinrude) contest on Ist. Jan. 1929 2 min. 21 sec. J. X. Robinson (Pit-a-Pat) contest on Ist. -April 1929 , 2 min. 1 4-5 secs. Throughout the .afternoon musical items were given by the Hokitika Rand, this being greatly appreciated In- the spectators. An aqua-planing demonstration was given by Messrs Park and O’Brien during an interval between the boat racing events. 'l'hc Club hope to hold a regatta early next season and it is anticipated that several Christchurch boats will be pa rtieipat ing.
