PROCEEDINGS WITHER AWN
[BY TFLEGKAPH —PER PRESS ASSOCIATION.)
AUCKLAND, April 2
A report that lie had instituted proceedings for libel against lit Hon Sir Joseph Camithers, of .Sydney, hut hud withdrawn them upon receiving a retraction, was confirmed to-day hv Sir George Richardson, late Administrator of Western Samoa. He said : ‘Tt came to my knowledge that Sir Joseph C’arruthers had charged me personally with hong responsible for what was said to be the root- cans© of the agitation in Samoa—the influenza epidemic. His allegation, in effect, was that, by officious ness and neglect of duty, ! had allowed the epidemic to, get into Samoa, with the result that there had been a largo number of deaths, for which the Samoans continued to hold New Zealand responsible. As Sir Josrpii had reopened l lie question, and had declared me to have boon personally responsible for the root cause to the whole trouble, I felt I should at least vindicate mysell so far as this particular charge was concerned. 1 took steps accordingly, but a timely apology prevented further legal proceedings.’*
