REFUSED BY MUSICIAN

Rooter Harold 'Malcolm Sargent. Condiictor-in-Chief of the Royal Choral Society, has refused £7OOO for a year’s service as the Musical Director of a West End cinema, his dutie' being to con duet leu minute sessions three times daily. In explaining his reiusal. Dr Sargent says that, while he could wish for better music at the cinemas, he cannot see how a ten-minutes piece, played before a big picture, is going to attract the special interest oi musical people. Sir Thomas IJeochnni agrees with Dr Sargent.. He says that lie dislikes the cinemas intensely, and that he only goes there when lie is dragged h.v friends.

Mr Eric Coates and others think differently. They regret'•Dr Sargent’s decision and express the opinion that tin 1 cinema re(|iiires the influence ol musical personality.
