Air John Brownlee, the baritone singer, who was recently appealing in opera in Australia, saved the situation at the Opera House when “The Magic Flute’' was hilled for a gala performance. The management found one oi Hie male principals had disappeared. Ft then urgently sent a message begging Mr .Brownlee, to take the t'tle role of “Rigoletto.” this being the only possible alternative. Mr BrownIce agreed. though lie had never before taken the part. Dame Melba, hearing of his decision, took a Fox. A brilliant audience enthusiastically approved of Mr Brownlee’s effort. He takes tlie part of “Herodi” in a special performance of “Salome” in Mar, for which Richard Strauss is coming specially from Berlin to conduct,.
