LATE LOCALS.

It is the opinion of the Hon. Mr Wilford (Minister for Defence) that as soon as possible there should be at least 50 airports in New Zealand. He considers that their preparation is the work of the municipalities. Mr Wil ford also believes that aircraft provide one of the soundest lines of defence of a country like the Dominion.

In connection with the Queen Carnival terminating this evening it is learned that two of the candidates , have increased their amounts considerably though not altering their positions on the list. There appears to be keen rivalry among some of tho contestants and it is difficult to say what will happen before the contest closes. '

The Carnival Ball held in the Soldiers Hall last evening in aid ot flio Fire Brigade Queen (Miss Glady Turner) was largely attended, patrons, present enjoying themselves immensely. A feature of the evening were the novelty dances presented. The floor was in- first class order and the music supplied by the Black Hand Orchestra was excelled A dainty supper was handed renmd by a willing band of lady helpers.

A Waimangaroa goldmining syndicate has just purchased the.. ShandMason steam fire engine from the Grevinouth Fire Board. The machine i/to Ik- sent out to work in the Wai--rnangaroa river pumping water out of claims. The fire engine was purchased by tho Grcvmouth Borough Council from England in 1892 for the sum of £I2OO. It did wonderful service in saving property in Greymouth while in commission.
