BYRD’S EXPEDITION

“By Russell Owen, copyrighted, 1929 by New York Times Com puny and St. Louis Post Dispatch. All rights for publication reserved throughout the world. Wifeless to ‘New York Times.’ ” BAY OF WHALES, Mareli 12. Byrd named part of the region explored by him after Captain Robert Falcon Scott, the famous explorer who contributed so greatly to our knowledge of this continent. He rests with liis companions on the other side ol this barrier on which we are living. Scott Land lies between King Edward Land and the eastern boundary of Ross Dependency. This area include. l large mountains discovered by Byrd and is .undoubtedly true land overlaid with cap ice and snow. The great area is truly worthy of the man whose name it bears. The limits of King Edw/ml Land have never been defined, inasmuch- as the only persons to set foot there before the Byrd expedition were three members of Amundsen’s expedition who made the trip to Nunataks region. .It was. discovered ant! named by Scott on the first voyage in the Discovery, but lie did not land there because lie did not at that time believe the conditions would permit them to do so. but on the charts King Edward Land has .been recognised as the region near the coast and including Scott Nnnataks. So it seems fitting that his name should he given to the large area to the south of King Edward Land, up to Amundsen’s socalled appearance of land, the beginning of which was first seen by him. '['here are many regions'on the coast of the Antarctic and near each other which hear different names, such as Adelie Lands, King George Land and Oates Land. Byrd is sure, as a result of his flights that the land begins just to the oast of the Bay of Whales, whether or not there is land undoi the southern limits of the Bay in the form of islands.
