It was mentioned at the meeting of the Westland County Council yesterday that the County Overseer’s Ford ear had covered 100,454 miles since it had been purchased.
There was a fine display of the Aurora Australis in the south-western sky last night between 8.00 and 9.30 o’clock. The phenomenon was watched by large numbers who were very interested in the changing lights.

Monday will he observed as a statutory holiday for St. Patrick’s Day. The special local event will be the benefit social dance and supper of the Hokitika Beautifying Society. There is the promise of a large attendance of town and country patrons for whom the ladies’ committee is making every prepara, tion.

Mr Frank Bade (late of McKay’s) notifies lie is opening in business on his own account in new premises at the corner of Hamilton and Tailored Sts, opposite the Library. Mr Bade is specialising in house furnishings and mercery, and is opening out a new lresli stock on Saturday morning next. Inspection is invited of the stock, the prices will be low and will speak for themselves.

The Sports Queen’s Con. cert in the Princess Theatre to-morrow evening promises to bo an outstanding success The programme is an excellent one. and the following are some of the performers: Mr and Mrs Arnold Perry, Misses A Duff, M. Bald, M essrs T. Clarke (Greymouth), J. Duffy (Greymouth), T. Moore and T. Stopforth. This is the Sports Queen’s filial attempt to gain victory and so her supporters should come to her aid to help her come out on top with flying colours. The Municipal Band will play a select programme of music outside the Theatre prior to> the concert.
