At an inquest concerning the death of John Mitchell Roll in the Millerton Mine, held at Westport on Friday, the Coroner (Mr E. It. Fox) returned a verdict that Bell’s death was due to shock resulting fr.,m injuries to tlie head and immersion in hot water. The injuries and immersion were caused through the deceased being caught in a large overflow of water coming from the tire area in the Westport Coal Company’s mine at Millerton on .March 6th. Witness was on the left, ami decreased on the right, where there was a fairly good clearance. As the tree foil it caught, a miro sapling, which bent over. When tlie latter swung back on the rebound it broke off near tlie ground and struck deceased, and also witness. Deceased was knocked down and never moved or spoke afterwards. Witness called out to other men working two or three chains away, and the body was then removed to the tramline, and taken to deceased’s home. The Coroner recorded a verdict in accordance with the medical testimony, and added that all the usual precautions appeared to have been taken by deceased and his mates, and no blame was attachable to anybody. Beautifying .Society should interest the public generally. The Society has taken the lead in regard to the improvements on Cass Square which is now such an indispensible asset to the town. Cass Square is worthy of all the attention it can receive, and if the citizens assist to replenish the funds of the Society, the money will ful ill assisting with more good work for the public good. The general patronage at the benefit next Monday night should be in keeping with the good the Society can do. A treat is in store for theatre goers on Thursday next at the Princess Theatre when a grand concert, to further the candidature of the Sports Queen, Miss Moira Stopforth is being held. Hokitika has long been famed, for its talent in musical circles and with the assistance of visiting artists of high repute the programme should b? worth while hearing. The object cf the entertainment as previously stated, should be an incentive to all those who class themselves as sports to gather round their Queen and see that when the hour of victory draws near that she comes out on top.
