MARINE POWER

A NEW MOVE

(United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright).

(Received this day at 8.30. a.m.) LONDON, March 8.

A remarkable development of marine engineering is foreshadowed in Ivylsant’s announcement that oil engines may be employed to generate electric power in the White Star’s new 00.000 tonner now being built at Belfast. The “Times” points out if the vessel is to bo driven by electrical power in combination with motor engines, it will give British ship-building and marine engineering atriplc lead. Not o|nly will she Ik* the largest ship afloat, but she. will also have the largest installations of Diesel engines electrically driven yet used at sea. The power required to drive her has not been definitely stated, but if as likely, it exceeds a bundled thousand shaft power, it means the engines will be four times more powerful than those of the Italian motor liner Augustus, which holds the record.
