N.S.W. MINERS. TO SAFEGUARD IDLE MINES. (Australian Press Association) SYDNEY, March 7. The New South Wales Miners’ Fed- , oration lias decided, to allow the safety men to remain on duty at the Northern Collieries during the idleness of the mines. TIMBER WORKERS’ FIGHT. MELBOURNE, March 7. Two thousand unionists, largely comprising timber workers, marched from the Trades Hall to the Court, as a protest- against the prosecution of Mr Holloway, the Secretary to the Trades Hall Council, on a charge of inciting the Timber Workers’ Union to do something in the nature off a strike. The alleged incitement was contained in a statement supplied to the. newspapers. The case is proceeding. HOLLOWAY FINED £SO. MELBOURNE, March 7. Mr Holloway (Trades Hall Secretary) was fined £SO, with costs of £23 25." A stay of proceedings, however, was granted. -Air Holloway, who was not represented by counsel, intimated that lie did not intend to pay the fine. He claimed that be bad done more in the past 20 years than any other man to maintain peace. STRIKER HURT. MELBOURNE, March 7. Four hundred marching timber strikers clashed with the police in Flinders ' Street- to-day, when an attempt was made to upset a load of timber. Two plain-clothes policemen courageously intervened, and used their batons and . handcuffs. One man was felled. He was scut to the hospital. The others were dispersed. FATAL CRASH. AUSTRALIAN : AEROP! .AXE. MELBOURNE. March 7. An Air Force moth aeroplane crashed at AVangarotta when en route to Richmond, Melbourne, this afternoon. I Flying Officer Herbert Warland was burned to death, and Flight Lieutenant Swinbirne was seriously burned when trying to rescue AYarland. The aeroplane had refuelled, and was taking off when it struck a tree, and then nose dived. RACING ENQUIRY. SOL GREEN EXONERATED. MELBOURNE, March 8. , At the inquiry into Ary Lady Gay’s running in the llivpr Handicap, the owner, Spl Green, was exonerated and the Jockey, R. Howe’s riding reported to the V.R.C. Committee.
