NATIVE ATTACK

The attack by the Papuan natives on the Government party appears to have been much fiercer in character than was at first reported. The Government party numbered eighty and the day after their arrival at Goilala, tlic natives were seen gathering, armed with spears. A volley of arrows injured three native policemen. Fighting continued throughout the day, arrows flying in all . directions. The following day an attack was made from all sides, volley after volley of spears coming from thick scrub. The total casualties consisted of nine of the attackers, who were killed by rifle fire, with additional casualties uncertain.
