PAPUAN UNREST
NATIVES WANT BETTER PAY. (Australian Press Association). PERTH, March 0. News from Habaui states that Brig-adier-General Griffiths began an inquiry into the origin of the natives’' demonstration on January 2 and 3, when most of the police boys and 3000 indentured labourers deserted at Rabaul. Outside the Court were thirty-one of the ringleaders, handcuffed to gether. These are now serving sentence and will give evidence. Missionaries gave evidence that the natives left work because they wanted higher wages, as the white man was taking gold from their country.
