Financial circles are displaying some anxiety regarding the possibility of a further advance in the bank rate. Money lias been so dear in New York that London branches of American hanks have been paying 8 per cent, for six months’ deposits, and G), per cent, for three months’. Fears are therefore entertained that the Bank of England may find difficulty in making the 5£ l>er cent, hank rate effective to protect its gold. Bradford has slightly improved in tone, but tlicre is very little business.
