It had had a trial and he could safely say if Inn been an unqualified success. It. was not perfect of course, but lie thought they would all agree that, it was a veiy fine programme. There was only one little fly in the ointment, a very excellent team had stood out against all competitors. 1o that team they should all take their hats off. To Superintendent Morrison and his team he extended his sincerest congratulations on their very fine suceesslul efforts. The\ all appreciated their kindness in stagin- their exhibition run, which was so successful. If Hawera can do it. there was no reason why other teams coub not do it, if they put in the same .amount of attention and training. ' Captain Watts said he wished on behalf of the Executive to convey thenmost sincere thanks to the people ol Hokitika for their very great kindness. Since they had arrived they had had nothing but hospitality showered on them. He had been ’-ere IB years ago and had looked forward to renewing old friendships: He had found he had not only retained the old ‘ :, es bet had made many now ones. Por-onal-lv he wished to thank many k”d friends for many kind references V' himself that lie had received during yesterday and to-day. Mr Hislop (Wellington) thanked the
Association for the invitation to come to Hokitika to present the Shield, the gift of Mr Frank Reddeway. of Manchester, whose object was to stimulate members to reach a high stale n efficiency. Addressing Supt. Morrison. Mr Hislop expressed his pleasure at His winning for the first time th s Shield. His team had set a standard that other teams should make every effort to reach. Supt. Morrison thanked the assemblage for the wonderful reception given his team. This was the third occasion they had been successful in winninsc the" Shield and they were very proud of retaining it. They had been practising for the last, five or six months, and had done afclieir best to bring l( hack. He thanked Mr Hislop for the “Camel” Shield and the sentiments
expressed. Captain Watts, addressing the firemen. said they all recognised that they had had a wonderful time in Hokitika and he thanked the people most heartily. Captain Hugo, as representative of the Minister of Internal Affairs, who had been present. would- have very great pleasure in reporting to the Minister that this Demonstration had been an unqualified success; that the Executive deserved every credit lor the piogramme drawn up, which was quite a great advance on previous programmes, and that he had heard no complaints. He would he able to report on the very practical assistance and the kind manner in which the people of Hokitika had assisted, and the general efficiency of the arrangements. He wished the Association every success in its future
programme. Captain Watts wished also to say that on no previous occasion had the Association had a ground in such good order. Hokitika could he complimented on having such a Well appointed ground on which to run a Demonstra-
tion. The proceedings closed with the singing of the National Anthem and the Conference and Demonstration of 1929 came to a highly successful con elusion.
