BULLER UNEMPLOYMENT. •By Telegraph—Press Association). WESTPORT, Feb. 28. Mr If. E. Holland, M.P., lias received the following telegram from the Hon E. A .Ransom, Minister of Public Works: “According to the Labour Department’s latest return there are only four'married men and seven men without dependents registered as unemployed at Westport. The District Engineer will provide work for the fom married men on the Westport-lnanga-hua Railway at an early date.” RAILWAY BUSES. WELLINGTON, February 28. The Railway Department is replacing ten of its present buses on Hutt road with a new type. The Department states the passengers carried by its forty-one buses during the past tWo months totalled 199,9.14 and 217,458 respectively, and it is expected that for the financial year the total will be two million passengers. The co-operation of the ' rail and motor services in the Hutt Valley has effected a saving of £SOO per annum on train operation. A LOCOMOTIVE RECORD. WELLINGTON, March 1. A record was established yesterday by one of the Garratt locomotives, recently assembled at the Hutt Valley workshops, when undergoing further steam trial, it took the heaviest load ever hauled out of Thorn don by one engine. INQUIRY INTO FIRE. WELLINGTON, March 1. The City Council last night decided to press for an inquiry into the recent market fire. SCHOOL COMMITTEE’S PROTEST. AGAINST JUNIOR: HIGH SCHOOL. GORE, March 1. Sixty representatives of district school committees at Gore last night passed a resolution strongly protesting against the further establishment of junior high schools, as a rise would, detrimentally, affect primary schools. It was stated that the new syllabus in primary schools would bridge the gap between primary and secondary establishments. OFFENDER RECAPTURED. AUCKLAND, March 1. John William Osborne, 17, who escaped from the Police Station lock-up a fortnight ago, was arrested at two o’clock this morning asleep in a large cupboard in the residence of George Bloomfield at, Epsom, about which the police had been informed a suspicious character had been seen. A half eaten apple asul an open book and bed made of eiderdowns, indicated Osborne had made him.self comfortable. Osborne had gained an entry by climbing through a window. Osborne submitted to arrest without a struggle. He appeared in Court later on a charge of breaking and entering and theft of jewellery and money to the value of £■7s. He was demanded to March 7th. as further charges are said to be pending. FIREMAN IN TROUBLE. AUCKLAND, March 1. A member of the Wellington Fire Brigade, Janies William Stewart, 25, who arrived with his wife to spend a: holiday in Auckland, was charged at the Police Court with the theft of a gold and diamond ring, and a camera of the total value of £lO, the property of some person unknown, the police alleging the property had been stolen by the accused from fires he attended. Accused was remanded on bail to Wellington. LIQUOR OFFENCES. WELLINGTON, March 1. Accepting tlie police evidence, Mr Hunt, S.M., to-day convicted Charles Henry Lockhart Tucker, confectioner, at Kilbirnie, on a. charge of selling liquor without a license. Following the sale to the police, a raid was made on the defendant’s place and a considerable quantity of liquor was seized. Mr Hunt had no hesitation in accepting the police story, and final him £25, in default three months. To his judgment, Mr Hunt added, and jn my opinion lie has told lies and committed perjury. A charge against Olaf Johnson of being illegally on premises was dismissed, the Magistrate saying there was some doubt.
