SOME DEFALCATIONS. (By Telegraph—Press Association). HAMILTON, February 26. At the Supreme- Court, there were two similar cases in which public scr vaiits were accused of misappropriations. Charles James, for failing to account for £251.t0 the Public Works Office ar Taumnrunui was sentenced to reformative treatment not exceeding a year. Counsel pleaded for leniency, the prisoner having made a clean breast. rle had ail aged mother to support-. The prisoner offered restitution.
Mr J ustico Blair said he would like to admit him to probation, but there were too many such-eases. In the second case was that of Colin Spalding Walker, lately Assistant Town Clerk at Rotorua, he was admitted to probation for three years on tbe usual conditions and on paying the costs of prosecution. TTie Judge said be considered tli£ case exceptional. The evidence showed tli defalcations were over a short period only. Walker had made a complete revelation of the facts. Apparently lie had acted under duress. Counsel had stated that a woman had blackmailed Walker, Knowing him to be well connected.
