A HANDSOME SHIELD

FIRE-FIGHTERS TO COMPETE. Fire brigadesmen Iroin one end ot the Dominion to the other will be interested to learn that Messrs A. R. riislop and Co., of Wellington, last .veek, took delivery of an extremely Handsome shield, which has been forwarded by Mr Frank Reddawav, of Manchester, for annual competition among the lire brigades of New Zealand at their annual display. The shield itself is of solid silver, and was made in the very best style by Messrs Joseph Rogers and Son, Ltd., of Sheffield, to a design which will appeal to all interested. The surmounting feature is a “camel” in full relief, the device of the Reddaway family and firm, but there are five embossed designs in light relief which give the trophy its own particular significance. The shield is donated to the threeman motor and pump competition—the modern machine now adopted by all brigades for the suppression of fires, so in harmony with the intention the shield is emblazoned by representations of tbe fire engines of the various ages. They commence with the two long-handler, manual operating on a large sized tub of water perched on wheels, such as was used b.v the firefighters of 1570 in Kiigand. 'I lie text shows a considerable advance in size and mechanical fittings. This one. is a sketch of the hand-pumped manual of 1(566, which was used at the historic fire of London. There are impressions of other engines of the type used in 1792 and 1903, and finally one of ihe motor engine and pump as used ioday. The “Camel Shield,” as it will he called, is 23 inches in height, and the same measurement in breadth. The Shield will he competed for at the Demonstration at Hokitika this week.
