Mr Baldwin,’ announcement that the Irish loyalists would be paid in full came as a surprise to tbc “Diehards,’’ who had not anticipated a decision so soon. Naturally they are overjoyed at the result of their protests. It is understood that the additional cost-to tin* Exchequer will be about four hundred pounds sterling, and that the total money paid will approach one million pounds, credit nations at the discretion of the Consultative Committee. The German’s object to the latter • provision, on the ground that the withholding of the transfers would he tantamount to an unfavourable report on Germany’s economic position, thus injuring Herman credit and resulting in the calling up of the short-term foreign loans. The French reply thereto is that Germany’s position is a highly favourable one. despite the German lamentations. as. it proved by the increase in the German bank deposits, and by the reduction of the German discount rate.
