SWIMMING.

GREYMOUTH CARNIVAL. Despite very unfavourable weather last evening, about nine hundred people gathered at the Municipal Swimming Baths to witness the carnival arranged by the Greymouth Swimming Centre in connection with the visit of the New Zealand lady swimming champions, Misses K. Stockloy, K. Miller and L. Hood. During an interval in the programme, a civic welcome was extended to the visitors by the Mayor of Greymouth, Mr J. IV. Greenslnde,

The event with the largest number of contestants was the 50 yards open handicap, and the winner, Boyes, a very young swimmer, showed great promise' Miss Stockloy competed, hut though placed in her heat, was unable to overcome her big handicap. Miss Miller scored a meritorious win in the 440 yards, easily outstaying Malloy, who was second. She also was nearly the winner of the 220 yards, being beaten by only a touch; after a biilliatn sprint over the last 20 yards, by Lind, who had the good, start of 18 seconds. Miss Hood’s exhibition of diving won salvoes of applause from the crowd. Misses Stockloy and Miller at the conclusion gave a very attractive exhibition of swimming, showing a wide variety of style, the hackstroke of Miss Stockloy specially pleasing, the spectators. One of the most -popular wins of the evening was that of Jack Ddmble in the heavyweight event, after a strenuous tussle with C. McKechnie. The time woiked at a second per yard.
