SIR A. DUCKHAM
FAREWELL MESSAGE TO AUSTRALIA.
SYDNEY, February 8
Sir Arthur Duckiiam, chairman 01 tno British Economic Mission, who left Sydney yesterday by the Niagara for Canada, issued the following farewell message:
“On leaving Australia f would express to the Press, on behalf of my colleagues and myself, our appreciation of the manner in which they have dealt with our mission; the manner of the publicity they have given to our report and our activities, and the fairness of their comment.
“The influence of the Press is of jarainoiiut. importance, and we have lound in Australia that that influence is exercised throughout for the good of Australia first. We have been aware ol healthy criticism. There is naturally political bias, but throughout national needs are not subjected to sectional ideas.
“It has been most gratifying. to us that our report has been received with far more general approbation than we could have expected, and wc, therefore, hope that now our mission has left Australia the Press will continue to give their support to the main recommendations of our report, especial: to the movenint for the attainment of more rational industrial conditions. “The success of the Industrial Concerence is of prominent importance to Australia, especailly at a time when industrial conflict is rife. This conference constitutes ii genuine attempt to develop and institute more rational methods of dealing with industrial problems, and as such warrants the fullest support of the Press and the people of Australia. “On our return home, we will discuss with those concerned how British news of importance and interest to the Commonwealth can be best communicated. We feel that the two countries do not hear enough of each other, especially of the successes and achievements.
“My return to Australia will be hastened hv the wonderful reception we have received and the many friends we have made.”
