A PROMISING PROPOSITION. (By Telegraph—Press Association). GISBORNE, Feb. 25. The Minister of Lands (Mr Forbes) last week inspected the Te Wera block, the Government acquisition of which was the cause of much comment. Mr Forbes was greatly impressed by the locality of the Block, and the condition of the land, and stated 1 before being again thrown open for selection, the access roads would be completed. It was reported to the Minister that since the withdrawal of the block, a number of applications from intending settlers had been received. The area m 9285 acres is now carrying over 10,600 sheep and 1200 cattle. BODY DISCOVERED. DUNEDIN, Feb. 25. The body of Samuel Jarvis, a Harbour Board employee, drowned near Quarantine Island on Feb. 19th., was discovered on Saturday about six miles further down the harbour. PRISONERS SENTENCED. WELLINGTON, Feb. 25. Prisoners sentenced by Justice Herdman were:— Cyril Howgate Sowry, 41, for indecent assault on a female child, uine months hard labour on each of two charges, to be concurrent.;' John Weir, 23, and Jack Summers, 20, for breaking and entering rnd theft, to the Borstal for not exceeding three years each, on two charges,’ to be concurrent. : Edward John Maekay, 35, breaking and entering and theft at Nelson, eighteen months hard labour. Charles William Patrick Foley, 19, breaking an entering and theft at Upper Hutt, to the Borstal for not exceeding two years. • Wm. Henry Tliomas, 41, and Daniel O’Keefe, 39, for breaking and entering and theft, the first to eighteen months and the latter to two years hard labour. James Albert Robert Bew, of Nelson, breaking, entering and theft, reformative detention for not exceeding two years. AN INQUEST. AUCKLAND, Feb. 25. On medical evidence at the inquest on Freda Lewis, 21, who died under strange circumstances of a sudden seizure at her home on January 30, poisoning at first being suspected, the Coroner, Mr McKean, S.M., found death was due to chronic cerebral hemorrhage. A SUICIDE. CHRISTCHURCH, Feb. 25. Reginald Bartram, 37, married, manager of Distributors Ltd., Christchurch branch, committed suicide yestereve in his office while an a state of mental depression. A verdict to this effec was returned by the Coroner. Letters left by Bartram were not read at the inquest. THEFT CHARGE. DUNEDIN, Feb. 25. Association with a gambling set and heavy speculation on the racecourse led to the downfall of Howard William Tliomas, 28, single, who pleaded guilty and *was committed for sentence on a charge of the theft of £206 from Henry Schneidenan, clothing merchant. Accused had been in Schneideman’s employ for three years as manager, first at Palmerston North and Hastings branches and then at Dunedin. Accused stated he lost £4O at the Wingatui races the first day and £55 on the second day. LIASON OFFICER ARRIVES. WELLINGTON, February 25. Major Eady has been sent from the British War Office as liason officer. The officer with his general staff arrived in Wellington by the Makura and proceeds to the South Island on Wednesday. On March Ist he inspects the r First Battalion of the Nelson, Marlborough and West Coast regiment in camp, and next day the Nelson College Cadets. On 7tli March he inspects the Third New Zealand Infantry Brigade in. camp near Oamaru, and later the Burnham camp and Sockburn aerodrome. In the North Island he goes to the A.R.A. meeting at Trentham from March 12th to loth, and also intends to visit the Seventh Battery camp at Waipukurau, and the Twenty-First Battery camp at the Rotorua-Waikato military camp, as well as the Hobsonville ’drome. Before leaving for Van- v couver he attends the senior course at Waiwera, commencing on 4th April.
