(Australian Press Association) BYE-ELECTION. SYDNEY, February 24. A bye-election to fill the vacancy in the Parramatta electorate, caused by the death of the Hon. Mr Bruutnell, Cabinet Minister, resulted in the return of the Nationalist candidate, Brigadier General Lloyd who defeated Mr Hooke Labourite, by 7(53 votes. This vote, however reveals a swing of over three thousand votes to the Labour Party since the last election. PEACE IN INDUSTRY CONFERENCE. SYDNEY, February 21. The Peace in Industry Conference has adjourned to a future date to be fixed, which means that it has practically broken down, owing to the withdrawal of the New South Wales delegates. SHARK VICTIM SUCCUMBS. (Received this day at 10 a.m.) SYDNEY, Feb. 25. Allan Butcher ,aged 22, who was terribly mauled by a shark at Maroubra last Monday, died in the hospital early this morning. LINER DISABLED IN STORM (Received this day at 10 a.m.) SYDNEY, Feb. 25. The Eastern and Australian liner, Arafura, has been disabled off Queensland coast. She wirelessed for assistance. Her propeller shaft is broken and she has a full passenger list, and is at the mercy of the storm off the notorious coast. The steamer Peshawar which is rushing to her air, is expected to reach the vessel by daylight. The Arafura’s position is given as about 25 miles off the coast between Rockhampton and Brisbane. HEAVY RAIN IN QUEENSLAND BRISBANE, Feb. 25. Heavy rain is reported in Queensland. Rockhampton recorded 31in. from Wednesday afternoon until Saturday morning. Eight inches fell at Yamba in three hours. Flood waters invaded parts of Rockhampton. In Casuarina Island, at the mouth of the Fitzroy River, 40in., were registered in two days. FATAL EXPLOSION. ADELAIDE, Feb. 25. There was a terrific explosion in Waterfall Gully quarry, scattering hundreds of tons of earth far and wide, and killing three men:—'Frederick Bowron, 46, married; Francisco Carnemolla, 25, married; Charles Lorimer, 24, single. A fourth man was injured. Carnemolla was hurled nearly two hundred feet through the air, and crashed against a fence. His face was terribly battered. Lorimer was buried under a heap of dirt. Bowron was blown off a cliff, and crushed between 'falling showers of stone. The workmen had prepared the charge to explode at noon, but through some unknown reason it went off three hours earlier. THE TIMBER WORKERS STRIKE. MELBOURNE, Feb. 25. The Crown Law officials served summonses on B. J. Holloway, Secretary of the Melbourne Trades Hall Council, and against the Timber Workers’ Union of Australia for inciting the timber workers to strike.
