Attempts last evening to refloat the auxiliary schooner Aratapu aground at Karamea. were unsuccessful the deck cargo is being removed to-day and another attempt will be made on tonight's tide. At present the tides are making.

GAMING HOUSE FINE

PALMERSTON NORTH Feb. 23. At the Police Court, Charles, Joseph, Williams charged with using his premises as a common gaming house pleaded guilty.r. Detective Quirk said accused was one 'of the biggest bettors in Palmerston North and had no other occupation. He asked for the maximum penalty although he admitted that accused had been perfectly Trank. The magistrate fined accused £75 saying he must inflict a substantial penalty.

ACCIDENT AT LIGHTHOUSE. WELLINGTON, Feb. 23

Signalled from Brothers Lighthouse that there had been an accident and a doctor was wanted, the collier Kaimai wirelessed Wellington last night. The Tutanekai had arrived in port in the morning but the crew bad disbanded. 2 Y. A. sent out a broadcast and by 8. 55. the Tutanekai had sufficient of a complement to put to sea. with a doctor.

On arrival at the lighthouse it was found the assistant Brown had fractured his nose and lacerated his wrist as the result of being struck by a winch handle hauling up coal previously left by the Tutanekai he was brought to Wellington and hospitalled.
