AMUSEMENTS.
EVERYBODYS PICTURES. ‘.‘.THE BELOVED ROGUE ” . —TO-NIGHT. A motion picture that is individual in - type, original - in conception and treatment, with none of the hackneyed, bromidic features with which the less courageous are wont to clutter up their offerings—such is “The Beloved Hogue,”, first of John Barrymore’s screen contributions under the United Artists’ ‘banner, which will be shown to-night at the Princess Theatre. Barrymore, ever forceful and convincing,
seemingly unlimited in his capacity for
varied characterizations, sets a stand- ~ “ Md in this vehicle which even he will find difficult to surpass. Given a story that -must have been very much to his liking, he succeeds in so submerging his identity in his role that it seems to be really Francois Villon, beloved French poet of the fifteenth century, who returns to entertain us with his brilliant moments of inspiration. What a succession of thrills Barrymore unfolds in “ The Beloved Rogue ” for his audiences! At the beginning, the complex Villoh plunging, leaping, sliding down the picturesque, steeply pitched rooftops of Paris, bent on thievery,
while his bosom pals, Jehan and Nich- ' Ojas, await in the snow-carpeted streets - „Below l to receive the loot and warn of the approach of the town watch. Then, named King of Fools on All Fools’ Day, he cavorts about in clownish attire, with grotesque, misshapen nose, and hehVy lips; a delightful caricature. Later comes his suit for the hand of Charlotte de Vauxcelles, ward of the king, with endless complications that lead him through the most amazing adventures. And so throughout the picture lie piles one surprise upon another. Petite Marceline Day is- a revelation as Charlotte de Vauxcelles, about whose charming head so much of the stirring action of the story revolves. Allow her further opportunities such as that she enjoys, in this new Barrymore release and there can be no doubt of ; her future greatness. On -iWsdny, Wallace Beery and Raymond Hatton in “Firemen Save My Child.’
