A SHOPLIFTER

CHRISTCHURCH, Feb. 22
Annie Hanlon, a married woman, aged 47, was sentenced to seven clays’ imprisonment for shoplifting. On three separate occasions she took goods from the D.I.C. of a total value of £2 8s 6d.
FINES FOR SUNDAY TRADING
CHRISTCHURCH, Feb. 22.
Convictions were recorded by Mr .Mosley S.M. at the Magistrate’s Court to-day, on charges against Adams Ltd.., motor agents, and to salesmen of the jinn, Vernon Clemns and Reginald Norman, for Sunday trading. Adams, Ltd. as charged with exposing motor cars for sale on Sunday, and the two other defendants with working at their trade on a Sunday. Adams, Ltd. were fined 10s and the other defendants ss, with costs.
DRUNK AT THE WHEEL.
AUCKLAND, Feb. 22
A. Ferguson, taxi driver, was convicted without fine, and liis driver’s license cancelled, for a second offence of being intoxicated while in charge of a car.

After defendant’s denial of the evidence, Magistrate McKean declared tnat accused had either committed perjury, or been so much under the influence of liquor that his memory became clouded.
The Magistrate addc that the City Council acted wisely in refusing defendant a license to carry out taxi work, as lie was not lit to have a license.
SUPREME COURT
INVERCARGILL, Feb. 20
In the Supreme Court, before Mr Justice MacGregor, the following prisoners were sentenced:
Leslie Alleii Brewer, for breaking, entering and theft, was ordered to pay costs of the prosecution, to take out a prohibition order, and to come up for sentence within the next two years. Jamesona Ycads Spiers and Henry Harlcv McNally, for issuing valueless cheques, were sentenced to twelve months’ imprisonment, his Honor commenting that the equally guilty should lie‘equally punished. Frank Anld, 28 years of age, for cifnial knowledge, was sentenced to 18 months’ hard labour.
James Barton, for carnal knowledge, and indecent assault, was sentenced to two years’ detention for reformative purposes. "Going downhill through drink," 'Loin mob ted his Honour.
