AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIPS,

WELLINGTON. Feb. 22

The New Zealand Amateur Athletic Championships commenced to-day on the Basin Reserve in perfect summer weather. The championship events resulted :

100 yds—First heat: C. Jenkins (W.) 1. H. McCoy (A.) 2, J. H. Murphy (C.) 3. Time 10 1-5. Second heat: A. J. Elliott (A.) 1, B. Geddes (0.) 2, R. Cordcry (C.) 3. Time lOsees. The final is to-morrow.

220yds.—First heat: R. Cordery (C.) I, C. Jenkins (W.) 2, H. McCoy (R.) 3. Cordery ran a great race, and just pipped Jenkins, who appeared to be easing up. McCoy was close at him third? Time 23 1-5. Second heat: A. J. Elliott (A.) 1, B. Geddes (O.) 2, L. C. Veiteh (W.) 3. Elliott made no race of it, winning by eight yards. 440yds— First heat: A. W. Findlay (O.) 1, J. T. Fleming (W.) 2, A. 1. Tidemau (C.) 3. Won by inches. Time 50 4-5 secs. Second heat: L. C. MeLacldan (0.) 1, N. J. Suckling (C.) 2, L. C. Veiteh (W.) 3. Also started: B, Geddes (0.). Won hv half a yard; two yards between second and third. Time 51 secs. The final is to-morrow.

Three Mile Flat.—J. W. Savidnn (A.) 1, F. Silver (W.) 2, A. L. Stevens (W.) 3. Running easily together, Savidan and Taylor led over the first mile, the pair keeping about 40 yards ahead of Silver, who was twenty yards'ahead of Garrett and Stevens. Half-way round the fifth lap, Savidnn lengthened his stride, and after making a vain effort to hold him, Taylor dropped back. In the following lap, shortly alter he was overtaken by Silver, but at the two miles mark Savidnn was half a lap ahead of the latter. At the bell the Auckland runner had a three-quarter lap lead, and he broke the tape only a few yards behind Taylor, almost lapping the Canterbury man. Time 14 mins. 59 3-5 sees. Silver’s time was 15 mins. 40 2-5 secs.

Three Mile Walk.—W. Tonkin (W.) 1, S. God sell (W.) 2. Over the greater part of the distance the two entrants hung together, but in the last half mile. Tonkin made the pace too stiff for his big opponent, and won by a very comfortable margin. lime 22 nuns. 54
