SWIMMING CARNIVAL
SPLENDID ATTENDANCE
There were about 900 people at the Municipal Swimming Baths last evening for the carnival organised in connection with the appearance of the lady champions, Misses Shockley, Millar, and Hood. The Club had matters well organised, and the evening passed very ' pleasantly. There was a cool southerly in the early part, but the wind dropped later and conditions were better. The Band played a short programme prior to the racing. The events proved very interesting throughout. There was some excellent swimming and the public were roused at times to great enthusiasm. Visiting swimmers from the north did well, while the local youths swam with distinction. Miss Stockley swam brilliantly, particularly in her first appearance in the 50 yards open, when very fast time was put up. Again in the 100 yards open a fine turn of speed was shown. The ladies race brought out but two contestants, Miss Dolly MeWhirter, with a liberal handicap alone .facing the champion. Tin task set Miss Stockley in this event was too great, Miss MeWhirter proving to be one of the most vigorous and romising local swimmers of the evei ■>". Miss Millar was not so conspicuous Miss Stockley. Miss Millar swam prominently in her heat for the 5 yards event, but appeared to better advantage in the 220 yards. In that event, 21 secs to C. Restieaux, a promising swimmer from Greymouth was I too much of a handicap for the fh::mI pion. Misses Stockley. and Malar ! gave a splendid exhibition of swimming at the close of the races. SevI oral styles were demonstrated, and I were enjoyed as much by the sy.i aimers as the onlookers. These amiable 1 young ladies were out to entertain, ; and they succeeded veiy pleasantly, and won round after round of applause. Miss L. Hood’s display of diving was a feature of the evening. The young lady did not spare lei sell, j but carried on with a fine exhibition of plain and fancy diving to the deI light of the audience. During the evening the President (Mr Evans) presented standard certij fieates from the New Zealand Amai tear Swimming Association to those j swimmers who last year qualified for ■ various distances, and the West Coast Schools championship medals were presented to Lily Staines (girls) and S. Diedriehs (boys), Mr Evans congratulated the winners and expressed gratification at the progress made by the school children for whom in the main the baths were constructed. A welcome was extended also to the lady champions whoso advent had excited such interest, and whose visit would do so much to stimulate local interest, particularly among the rising generation. Hearty cheers were given for the visiting lady swimmers and competitors.
Sbsequently a very successful welcome social dance was held at Hie Soldiers’ Hall, where there was a happy gathering of young folk to wind up a most pleasant and successful evening.
