WELLINGTON, Feb. 21

Charles Harwell, who left at seven o’clock last night in a canvas canoe to cross Cook Strait, failed in the at-

tempt. A telegram received from Porirua states that he “got half way by 12 30 o'clock. There was a fresh southerly breeze. Then, with the flood tide, be returned, landing . inside M.ana Island.” He is thought to be camping near Plinnnerton.
