MAIL ROBBERY

WELLINGTON, February 21
Four arrests were made yesterday in conjunction with the mail robbery on the Waliino during the trip from Lyttelton to Wellington on Saturday night week, and to-day Thomas Gordon, 22, Richard Ryan, 20, George Wilfred Ryan, 24, and Arthur Henry William Be van, 23, appeared before Mr Page, S.M. The public gallery at the rear of the Court was crowded. The first three accused are taxi drivers. I3evan is described as a plumber and labourer. The charge was of stealing from the Wallin • about £l2O in money, a lady’s wrislet watch, one fountain pen, and ring of a total value of £l7O. On the application of the Chief Detective they were remanded till 27th February. Asked by the Magistrate if he opposed bail, the Chief Detective said the facts were that oil the night of the 9th mails, on the steamer Wahine were pillaged and a. large number of mail bags and postal packets were opened and their contents, money and goods, amounting to about £l7O, were stolen. Some of the stolen property had been recovered. Accused were charged with the offence, bailable at his Worship’s discretion. He did not oppose bail, but lie asked that it be substantial. Accused were each admitted to bai l on their own bonds of £2OO and two sureties off £2OO.
