ROTORUA, February 20
The annual meeting of the New Zealand branch of the Empire Press Union was held to-day, some 35 members being present, and Sir George Fenwick (chairman) presided. The report stated the branch was formed immediately after the formation in England and had been in existence 19 years and numbered 02 members and associates and had fully done its share of its duties both financially and otherwise. An allusion was made to the progress of wireless, messages from the Byrd expedition being mentioned as an instance of its value. Regret- was expressed that more had not been done in New Zealand to promote its use. Finances showed a credit balance of £BB. Sir George Fenwick, who received a great ovation, was re-elected chairman. The committee re-electpd were: H. Horton, AV. Cecil Leys, L. P. Blundell, P Solig, AA r . C. Lestou, C. AAA Earle. J. CoonVbe, A. McNicol, R. J. Gilmour. C. S. Smith, L. AY. Dow secretary, and AV. Easton auditor. , AUCKLAND POWER. BOARD LOAN. AUCKLAND, Feb. 20. The Auckland Power Board’s proposal to raise £675,000 for extensions and development in readiness for receiving current from Arapuni, was earned by 3.9-14 to 894 at a poll to-day. INCENDIARY AT THAMES. THAMES, Fob. 20. What was an obvious act of incendiarism occurred when an attempt was made to burn tlie Central Hall at Thames. It was discovered yesterday that a fire bad been lit under the building at the back, but it bad burnt out after charring a number of boards. The Brigade bad been turned out frequently to fires of suspicious origin. Last evening they were called out to an empty house on Hone Road, which was apparently set alight. The Brigade saved the house, but two firemen were temporarily overcome by dense smoke. This morning the Brigade were culled to yet mother fire, this time a garage on j-jeach Road, which was subdued easily, i ms was the sixth fire this month. The nolice are investigating.
