Sardine fishing and canning promises to become an industry of New Zealand and to he established in the first instance in Auckland, states the “New Zealand Herald.” The discovery is claimed to have been made that the true sardine, of which the Mediterranean Sea has hitherto been the chief known habitat, teems in the Hauraki Gulf and is also to be found in large quantities on other parts of the New Zealand coast. A syndicate has been formed in Auckland to carry on experiments in the gulf for the discovery of the places where the little fish are most plentiful. 'Hie credit- of the discovery of the existence of the sardine in Auckland waters is claimed by Mr F. S. Petrie, of Parnell. It was made in the first instance through some specimens being found in the digestive organs of porpoises. caught off The Watchman, Cape Colville.
