In a Bristol Fighter biplane, piloted bv Hinkler, an attempt was made by the Australian Press Association on a Nomieliael six-valve Super-Heterodyne sc., operated by Wireless Expert Allen, to receive in the air a special JL.O. broadcast. Though the engine was screened for a long wave research, the magneto caused much interference with tiie short wave, that this, coupled with' periods of fading, prevented a con..mious reception, hut nevertheless frequent snatches were heard of music that could he recognised and also the announcer’s call. Both he lore and after the flight a party on the ground neard hand and orchestra music with wonderful clearness. This was the lir,st time Australia had been heard in an aeroplane, even on the ground. Allen is convinced that with better screening, an attempt to receive in the .•nr will he successful, and it will lie renewed later in a new type of large cabined machine, in the hope of heating the recent American Antarctic roumi. IRISH TARIFF. LONDON, Fob. 20. The Dai I Eireaiin has increased customs duties on woollen goods wholly o. partly manufactured, to 25 per cent, ad valorem, and other personal apparel to 20 per cent. A LENT ALLY DEFICIENT. LONDON, Feb. 20. The Grand Council of the National Citizens Union passed a resolution urging the Minister of Health to conduct an inquiry into the best method of dealing with mentally deficient and incurably diseased, including special inquiry into the possibility and •idvisibilitv of legalising sterilisation under proper safeguards in certain cases. The document is signed by fifty distinguished representatives of the churches, law, and medicine, including Farquliar Buzzard (King’s physician). Sir A. Fripp (Kings surgeon) points out that sterilisation has been legalised in twenty-three States in America, Denmark, Norway and Czecho-Slovakia. The need For inquiry is urgent in England as largely owing to State intervention thousands of diseased and deficient persons are kept alive. He adds that segregation lias failed. AIR KELLOGG’S SUGGESTION. WASHINGTON, Feb. 20. A suggestion lias lieen made by Air Kellogg to the World Court of Nations, that an informal exchange of views between themselves might lead to an agreement upon some provision, which in ail unobjectionable form, would protect the rights and interests of the L iiied States, as adherent to the Court statute. SPANISH POLITICS. MADRID, February 20. Decrees dissolving artillery corps were responsible for a revolt at ( indad. Gazetted officers temporarily reduced to civilian rank were ordered to go to their homes without pay, until tile corps is reconstituted in July, when officers whose commissions were confirmed would he obliged to take the oath of fidelity to the constituted Government. The decree urged loyal officers to apply for reinstatement in the corps.
