ENGLAND v. N.S. WALES.
POOR. SCORING
(Australian Press Association)
SYDNEY, February 18,
The New South Wales versus England match was continued to-day. The captains, on inspecting the wicket at noon, decided to examine it again at one o’clock, overnight rain affecting it. On the second occasion, the pair resolved on another inspection at 1.45 o’clock, when a definite start was fixed for 2.15. Hendren fielded instead of Sutcliffe, who was suffering from a strain in the shoulder.
Eleven balls finished the N.S.W. innings, two runs only being added. After Freeman had bowled an over, White got Morris caught at first slip by Hendren. MoNamee was caught at mid-'on by Mead. White with succes-, sive balls thus took two for none today, and in all five for 48. England lost Leylaml early. He just touched a ball from Fairfax, which rose almost shoulder high, and was easily caught by Hooker at first slip. Tyldesley, when seven, swung the same bowler high to leg. Marks judged well, but missed the catch. Hooker. MeNamee and Marks were tried as bowlers, but all kept their balls too short, enabling the batsmen to hook them. None took advantage of the state of the wicket.
Hobbs, when 39, reached forward to Fairfax. The ball cut through sharply, striking the off stump. The batsman had been in 75 minutes, and had hit only two fours. At tea the score was two for 71.
