A CASE OF LEPROSY

WELLINGTON, February 19
A case of leprosy is included in the list of notifiable infectious diseases reported to the District health authorities for the week ended noon yesterday. The case reported is in Napier Hospital, but, according to the local health officers, there is yet some doubt whether it is genuine or not.
A PROPOSED SWIM
WELLINGTON, February 19
Following upon her unsuccessful attempt to swim Cook Strait, it is now announced that Miss Lily Coppiestone intends to attempt to swim across Wei- 1 lington Harbour on March 31st.
THEFT OF CAR
DANNEVIRKE, Feb. 19.
Desiring a car to bring some luggage into town, Arthur Alfred Gurney, a. stranger to the district went to a local garage to hire or borrow a car. There being no one in attendance he took, without authority, a car valued at £675, got his luggage and when stopping in the vicinity of the garage was arrested, subsequently facing a charge of conversion of the car. Magistrate Miller characterised the accused’s act as (being particularly impudent and iin (view of previous convictions, sentenced him to one month’s imprisonment.

RACING DEPUTATION. WELLINGTON, Feb. 19
Replying to a deputation from the Dargaville Racing Club last night Mr de la Per olio (Minister of Internal Affairs) stated he was emphatically opposed to racing clubs racing on other than their own courses, except m genuine cases of emergency or when a course was under ' repairs. He could not grant a permit when racing on another course was for financial reasons as the clubs thereby robbed the residents of their own districts of a pleasure to which they were entitled. He favoured the publication ot dividends and telegraphing investments to the racecourse but expressed no opinion concerning the reduction of taxation, which he said was a matter for the Minister of Finance and Cabinet to decide.
ALLEGED THEFT,
ROTORUA, Feb. 19
Before Mr Paterson, S.M. Colin Spalding Walker, late assistant Town Clerk, was charged on nine counts with stealing sums aggregating £”8 18s Id with intent to defraud. Detective AY hive’ prosecuted. An appeal by accused’s counsel that the charge be induced to one of common theft, was deferred by the Magistrate, until the hearing of evidence. The case is proceed mg.
