A THUNDERSTORM

MELBOURNE, Feb. 17
There was a terrific thunderstorm here yesterday afternoon. The i oof of the Town Hall Hotel at South Melbourne was blown off. Several men in the bar were injured. The city streets were flooded and a boy was killed by lightning at Werribee.
A DARLINGHURST TRAGEDY
SYDNEY, Fob. 17
A carousal at Darlinghurst, early today, ended in John Connolly, aged 28, a pastrycook, being shot in the .stomach, and dying. A number of Connolly’s companions, both men and women of the underworld, were heard quarrelling in the street after a party. Then there was a shot, and the crowd scattered and disappeared.
CRUISER CANBERRA
SYDNEY, Feb. 17. ,
The second of Australia’s new ten thousand ton cruisers, the Canberra, reached Sydney, her home port, today, and was cordially welcomed. The other cruiser, the Australia, is being overhauled in dock here.
AT WILSON’S PROMONOTORY
SYDNEY, Feb. 18
News was received at 10 o’clock last night that the , well known Huddard Parker steamer Kanowna was wrecked at Wilson’s Promonotory, Southern Victoria. The steamer Canberra P racing to her assistance. There are no further details. The Kanowna has a large passenger list. Visibility is very bad along the coast owing to misty rain. <
SYDNEY CIVIC CONTROL
SYDNEY, Feb. 17
The saving to the city effected by Sydneys Civic Commissioners is esti mated by the Citizens’ Reforms Association at over one hundred thousand sterling. The Commissioners’ treatment of tenders alone, they stated, saved more than the whole cost of their salaries for two years.
IX) SS OF A COLLIER
SYDNEY, Feb. 17
A quantity of wreckage is coming ashore from the sunken collier Annie M. Miller. There is no sign of the six missing crew. Apparently their bodies have been devoured by sharks, whH' are plentiful.
