FIRES
AT WANGANUI. (By Telegraph—Press Association). WANGANUI, February 17. A fire at 3 a.m. did extensive damage to Merewether’s motor garage. Practically in the whole stock of spare parts and fifteen cars were damaged, including eleven parked for the night. The damages are not estimable accurately, but probably will amount to seven or—« eight thousand pounds. _no residence of Duncan Lowrey, in Turakina Valley, was destroyed by lire with all the contents, on Saturday iiilloi-noon. There was nobody at home.
A GISBORNE STORF DAMAGED. GISBORNE, February 17. A storeroom near the centre of the town, owned and utilised by G. S. Vincent, painter, and containing six to seven thousand rolls of wallpaper, paints and oils, was badly damaged by fire on Saturday night. The building was insured for both in the Sun office. FIRE ON OCEA N LI NE R. INVERCARGILL, February 17. A lire was discovered in the bunkers of the liner Mahanu on her trip front"-* Wellington to Bluff. Owing to the fire fighting facilities and to the prompt action of the 'officers and crew, the fire was got under control. So far as is known, the vessel will proceed'direct London to discharge her New Zealand cargo. INVERCARGILL HOUSE LOST. INVERCARGILL, February 17. A fire early this morning totally destroyed a five-roomed dwelling at corner of Princess Street and George r Street South, Invercargill, owned and occupied by Robert Aitkin. The family had a narrow escape. The flames, fanned by a strong wind, soon destroyed the building. The house was insured for £4OO and the contents for £l5O.
