In connection with the aquaticsports at Lake Mahinapua on Wednesday week, on the occasion of the firemen’s picnic to that resort, a temporary boat landing has been erected for the convenience of those going to the iako by boat. A special landing for the motor boats, where they can fuel has also been provided. Motor boat racing will (be one of the features of the-afternoon’s sports. A public meeting will ho held in the Town Hall on Tuesday, Feb. ]9th. at 8 p.m. with the object of forming a committee to help carry out Rod Cross peace-time work in the district. Sister I). M. Work on Waikukupa bridge is being; pushed oil on the road section to link up Welicka with the main south road. The girders of the new bridge are now in position, and foot traffic is possible in emergency. A short span is being constructed at one end, and when this is done and the planking laid in about a fortnight’s time, vehicle traffic will he available. This will lie a great boon to all concerned, making the southern trip safer and assuring the through journey to Weheke, where Messrs Sullivan Bros, have provided a fine hostel for tourists and travellers with all the latest improvements and convenience.
The new deviation of the main south road, necessitated by the erosion of the Wataroa river, beyond Tetaho, was open for light traffic to-dav, and will he available from now on for all traffic in the event of any sudden emergency caused by tho further erosion of the river. This piece of road makes n considerable dotopr to avoid the river bank, passing over swamp land which has been costly to negotiate. The Public Works Department lias made a very serviceable road, and throughout has done all possible to meet the requirements of traffic. Absence of finger-print evidence was commented upon by counsel for the deforce in a burglary case concluded in ihe Supreme Court at Auckland on Tuesday (states the “ New Zealand Herald.”) Mr Justice Blair told the jury it was not every burglar that was foolish enough to leave his finger, prints. •“ A criminal does not usually leave his visiting-card, so to speak, t show that lie lias called,” observed his Honour. “ and if lie knows his business lie takes earn that he does not.” So the mere fact that no finger-prints had fieoii found was immaterial.
Mr T. A. Johnston, District Engineer, while in 'South Westland last week, inspected the survey of the new main south road from Wehoka to Karangarua. This work was sanctioned last Parliament and is part of the Croat South road scheme so long advocated. 'l’lie survey is said to be proceeding very satisfactorily. In the main, it is following the line of the recoil nuisance survey carried out some time ago by the Lands Department. It is Imped at no distant date to see work on the actual construction in hand. There will he room for the employment of a large number of men on this important district work which will lie such a direct aid for the faster development of the Far South.

Robinson, of Hokitika, competing with Eit-a-Pat at the Akaroa Motor Boat Racing Carnival, won the Now Zealand Championship Outboard Motor race. The amount of coal, timber, produce, stock, and general merchandise railed through the Otira tunnel for last week was 11,419 tons, as against 10,040 tons for the corresponding jjoriocl last year, being an increase of 1379 tons. The amount dealt with in the same period in 1927 was (1780 tons. p Messrs ?d. Houston and Co direct attention to their sale- by auction on Thursday next of the household furniture and effects of Mr fl. Timpson on the premises, Park Street, near the School and also of dray, harness, saddles and other articles. Tho main south road beyond Waiho Gorge is being improved, a vote of £ISOO having been provided in the last session of Parliament. The section as far as Dochcrty Creek has been widened and metalled, and the improvement is quite marked, and wi!l\ be appreciated greatly by the travelling public. The district was promised considerable improvement in its road ing, and the works are now in hand.
