SANDERS CUP RACE
VESTERDAY ’S RJSSUL'I’S. (By Telegraph—Per Press Association.) AKAROA, Feb. 15.
Two races in the'Sanders Cup contest were sailed here, to-dav, and were won by the Wellington boat Clyde, and the Auckland boat Avalon, respectively. The morning race was sailed under boisterous conditions, and the Clyde put up a line performance. Her win was most popular, as it is llic first time during eight years it lias' been reported that a "Wellington boat has secured a win. in the afternoon race the Avalon put up a sterling performance, 'flic Eileen, which bad put up a disappointing performance in the morning race, made a great showing in the second race, and finished only lmin 20secs behind the Avalon. The third race will be sailed to-mor-row morning over a windward and leeward course.
The morning race started at 10.40 a.m. The wind was a strong southerly, with a choppy sea. All the boats carried : heavy weather four-men crews. The Clyde got a beautiful start, followed by the Colleen, Avalon, Aluriliiku. and Eileen. The Eileen and Avalon essayed the niidliarbour. the Auckland boat having a good lead to windward. The Colleen and ( lyde came out from the slum' off Green iPoint. The Murihiku kept towards the shore. The Clyde was in a good position in the middle of the harbour, and was sailing a. grout race. Both the Eileen and Avalon struck a smoofli patch. The Colleen was pressing the Clyde hard close to the buoy. They rounded 17sees ahead. The Eileen was last.'The Clyde Imd trouble in breaking its spinnaker. On the run, the wind lightened considerably. ibo Clyde and Colleen were running level, and the Colleen turned losecs ahead. The Colleen lost time after rounding, and the Clyde weathered her. Oil Green Point, .the Clyde was two minutes ahead of the Colleen, with the* Avalon moving up fast. Ihe Clyde still held her and rounded lmin ik'l secs ahead. When the Colleen broke her spinnaker, it was seen that it was badly split. The Clyde increased her load on the run and the race finished in the following times: Clyde, Hill's 25mins 50 secs.l; Avalon. 12hrs 28mins oflsccs, 2: Collecii, 12lirs. 28inins 31 secs ;3 ; Murihiku 12lu\s 30mins Ssecs, 4; Eileen 12lirs 31m ins losecs o. The afternoon rrc. started at 3.10 o’clock The weather was line and the breeae fresh. There was little sea. The' course was triangular. All the boats carried four men. All the boats crossed the lined together. 'lhe Avalon soon had a good lead and rounded the weather buoy lmin lOsccs ahead of the Murihiku. The Avalon was increasing the distance between her and the others. The Avalon and Murihiku failed to .sight the buoy at first, and went wide. Tile Avalon rounded with lmin husoes in hand. I lie Eileen, Murihiku, Colleen and Clyde were in that order. At the third mark the position remained unchanged, the Avalon sailing a great race. The Eileen had a lot of trouble with her .spinnaker. The boats made a fine sight coming down the wind with everything drawing. The finished times were:— Avalon, -flirs Amins 20secs: Eileen. 4hrs 47mins hOsecs; Colleen, 4hrs 4D mins • 40secs; .Murihiku, 4lirs ohm'ins 20seos; Clyde, 4lirs oOmlns 52socs.
