WESTLAND COUNTY COUNCIL.

TUESDAY, FEB. 12th. ATTENTION TO HIGHWAYS. I linvc; the honour to report upon the progress of works on the Seeoiularv Highways during the month of January. LAKE KANIERI HOAD.

Lake Kanieri road was repaired hctweeu Kokatahi road and Lake Kanieri by filling motor worn holes with gravel. Portions beyond Boucher's hill widening, received a eoa.t of gravel six inches in. height, and in various lengths beyond Ward road, over a distance of 2d chains in length, 160 cubic yards of gravel were used in raising low portions of roadway, the road receiving a dressing of gravel ten feet in width and six inches in height on the crown of the road. '! he road was regraded, the Austin road grader, drawn by the road tractor being used for the purpose, resulting in a great improvement in the condition of the road surface from Lake Kanieri to Kanieri, the distance covered being approximately nine miles 'The ten ton roller was used in rolling the road after grading from Ward road to Lake Kanieri, and from Lake Kanieri to Kokatuhi road junction, approximately ten and a half miles. Watortables were cleaned from Stripland creek bridge, to the foot of Slip hill and from the top of Slip hill, where necessary, to the western toe of Boucher’s hill, covering a distance of two miles. Encroaching growth was cleared from the roadside for lialT a mile beyond Boucher’s hill widening, and (he bond on the western side of Boucher’s hill widening, cleared for four chains in length and fourteen feet in width at centre running to six feet in width at each end of clearing. The inside of the curve at the Blank bridge between Boucher’ htU and Ward road was also cleared of scrub for 250 links in length and 12 feet in width. Repairs were effected to McKay’s creek bridge 1/21 led and 1/15 feet by 12x6; 9/12 feet by 6xl ; and 2/17 and 2/15 feet by Ix 4; 2/15 feet by 3x3, comprising transomes, decking and railing were lemovod and replaced with inner heart of rimu timlbor. Detective decking was from Left Hand branch bridge and replaced with 8/12 icet by 4x4 planks.

PAINTING HANDRAILING. The standards and handrailing of Crayfish crook bridge, 18 feet span, the first bridge on Lake road, was painted with two coats of white paint. BOUCHER’S HILL WIDENING. The whole of the widening on the hillside, and filling and widening the bend on the western toe of the hill was completed in a very satisfactory manner, ample room being provided for all classes of traffic to pass in safety, the improverent being noticeable and greatly appreciated by motorists. The amount of -material removed during the month amounts to 415 cubic yards of gravel. SLIP HILL WIDENING. The slip continued to give trouble during wet weather necessitating tin* removal of dobris to keep the road open for traffic. 'lbis work has been continued to date, resulting in conditions lreing greatly improved, the old slip not extending but subsiding off the bard, greasy bank toward the Uoadway, ami from present appearance should he fairly safe after the loose material is removed. The amount of material removed during the month amounts to 362 cubic yards of stone and earth. LOWER KOKATAHI ROAD. SECOND A R Y HIGHWAY. Lower Kokatahi to McArthur mad was re-graded from Kar eri to Graham's Hotel, a distance of 7 miles, also motor worn holes and depressions repaired with gravel over the same distance, heavily graded and outer accumulation of grass growth removed from shoulders of gravel for two feet in width on each side ol the road, and all the debris removed three feet back from outer edges of graded nortirm, from !) miles to !) miles 6(1 chains, and from 11 miles to 12 miles 17 chains, a total distance of one mile 77 chains. Motor worn holes were repaired with gravel I'mni ilvokatnln bridge to Municipal road, a distance of 3 miles 20 chains, and 15 cubic yards of crushed metal placed on worn portions of the road between the 9 mile and 10 mile pegs. Encroaching gorse and blackberry growth were cleared in sections from Morris hill |.) the 11 mile peg. The stone retaining wall on each side of the filling ol !Ichlall’s creek pipe culvert was strengthened by building an outer covering wall of heavy stone, ten cubic yards of stone being used for I ho purpose. Ttoadside dumps were replenished on the Koiterangi and Lower Kokatahi sections with 10 cubic yards of gravel. Two loads oi manuka send) were carted for proleel.ion of the southern abutment of Kokatnlii river bridge. UPPER KOKATAHI ROAD. Upper Kokatahi Road. Motor worn | M ,|es were repaired from Graham’s Hotel feir a distance of one mile, uid two hael depressions on the road surface' impaired with gravel. I he tedal quantity of gravel used being 10 cubic yards for motor worn holes, and 5

cubic yards for depressions, total 15 cubic yards. BRIDGE AND CULVERT RENEWAL. Raft Creek Bridge. Defective retaining planks at the Northern abutment, and worn traffic planking wore removed and replaced with 20/16 by Bx2 traffic planks, and 2/18 loot ly Bxl retaining planks. 'Total quantity of timber used 522.8. Kokatahi River Bridge. Defective decking 10/16 feet b.v Bx 4 were removed and replaced oil Kokatahi River Bridge, total quantity 42(5.8. Monk’s Creek Culvert, near Diedrich’s Stockyard was attended to and 8/14 by Bx 4 planks removed and jeplaccd with inner heart of rimu timber total quantity 298.8. 'Traffic plank ing was also placed oil the bridge three feet in width being portions of the sound removals from Rait Creek Bridge. 'Three cubic yards of gravel were also placed on each side of the bridge to bring the approaches to tlio level of planking. Lang Road Drainage Outlet Culvert The stringers being defective were removed and replaced with 5/6 loot by 14x9 stringers, and decking replaced with 10/14 feet by Bx 4 planks bringing the deck level sfx inches above the roadway, the removed stringers being only Sinehes in height and too- weak to support heavy traffic; the approaches to the culvert had consequently to be raised accordingly and 285 cubic yards of gravel were used for the purpose. Traffic planking was placed on the decking of culverts three feet in width being portions of sound removals from Raft Greek Bridge. Total quantity of timber used, exclusive of traffic planking, 688.4 superficial feet. PAINTING BRIDGES. Kanieri River Bridge. The standards and handrailing of Kanieri River Brigc, 120 lineal feet, and railing of Outlet Drain Bridge, 25 feet span, were painted with two coats of white pajnt for woodwork, and black paint for straps and ironwork.
